Taxi Steps That Stick Out Look Wrong

Is it me or does anyone else think that those taxi's that have their step stick look wrong.
In fact, they look pretty dangerous to me.
The steps lead into the passenger compartments.
I can imagine that there would have been an incident at sometime with them.
I see quite a few of these where I live, the taxis are the size of the London black cabs.
I don't think they stick out further than the mirrors, so maybe they are legal but they look so wrong.

Someone somewhere will get their shins clipped no doubt.
Surely these are retractable steps that should be put away when not in use.
I drove a van with those sort of steps and mine retracted.

They do look a bit menacing, how are they getting away with it?

They don't stick out too far to be honest.

I have noticed this as well. If these steps stick out any more they would be planes

I saw a few of these recently but they don't stick out too much, just that they look slightly odd.

I don't think they will stick out more than their driving mirrors.
